Why do dentists polish teeth?
Polishing teeth is part of the normal procedure of a regular dental visit for most dentists, including in our Maple Grove office. After removing plaque with the ultrasonic tool, the tool that sprays loose plaque and tartar, and being sucked away or spat out, the dentist does some scraping removal. The polishing tool is a rubber, circular tool that messages teeth with paste. The polish removes stains and makes your teeth feel smooth. Originally, polishing was used to make it harder for plaque to stick to your teeth, but in recent studies, the ultrasonic tool does that on its own. Now, it is thought to be more cosmetic, but it is still a part of most dental routines.
